Desert Demarcations are responses to the Western landscape. By definition, a demarcation is the act of fixing a boundary or limit on something. In these works, I arranged or “drew” with rods in the Nevada, Arizona, and Utah deserts to establish thresholds from which to view and experience the surrounding landscapes. They are inspired by Donald Judd’s 15 untitled works in concrete, 1980-1984. Judd used large scale cement slabs in this installation, speaking to the masculine. Desert Demarcations, contrastingly, are made with small scale everyday materials, referencing the feminine.
